Summary:
The post holder acts as a Urology/Continence Nursing Services Specialist providing specialist support and advice on all aspects of bladder and bowel care.
Location: Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury
Contract: Permanent, working Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours
Responsibilities:
NSIC Neurogenic Bladder and Bowel Responsibilities:
- Provide specialist support for patients with neurogenic bladder and bowel dysfunction.
- Support patients with spinal cord injury and complex neurological conditions requiring specialist bladder and bowel management
- Provide advice regarding bladder emptying, bowel management programmes, continence strategies and complication prevention
- Support the development of neurogenic bladder and bowel pathways across healthcare settings
Urodynamics Responsibilities:
- Support the delivery of urodynamics services where required
- Prepare patients for urodynamic investigations and provide education regarding procedures and follow-up care
- Support clinical assessment, documentation and follow-up associated with urodynamic investigations within professional scope of practice
Caseload and Referral Management:
- Manage an allocated caseload of patients requiring bladder, bowel and continence support
- Triage referrals according to clinical need and agreed service pathways
- Monitor patient outcomes and ensure timely follow-up and escalation where necessary
Expand Education Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver formal education programmes relating to bladder, bowel, continence and catheter management
- Provide training to NHS staff, community teams, care agencies, patients and carers
- Identify learning needs and support competency development across healthcare teams
Safeguarding and Governance:
- Ensure safeguarding principles are embedded within all clinical practice
- Participate in incident reporting, investigation and organisational learning activities
- Support complaint reviews and service improvement initiatives
- Promote infection prevention and control standards in all clinical settings
Audit and Quality Improvement:
- Participate in clinical audit, service evaluation and quality improvement programmes
- Use patient outcome and activity data to support service development
- Contribute to the development and review of clinical policies, pathways and patient information resources
Wider Stakeholder Responsibilities:
- Develop effective working relationships with consultants, commissioners, community providers and multidisciplinary teams
- Promote continuity of care across acute, community and specialist services
- Represent Hollister Clinical Services positively with internal and external stakeholders
Essential Functions of the Role:
- Valid NMC PIN
- Proven experience and keen interest within Urology / Continence Care
Work Experience Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years nursing experience
- Demonstratable Urology clinical experience
- Community experience (desirable)
Education Requirements:
- Qualified Nurse RGN (essential)
- Recognised Continence Care / Urology Qualification (desirable)
- Evidence of recent post registration training and development (desirable)
Specialized Skills/Technical Knowledge:
- Knowledge and ability to demonstrate a research-based holistic approach to patient care
- Ability to keep up-to-date with educational, professional and clinical developments
- Can establish priorities, diary management and organise own workload
- Good understanding and experience of clinical IT systems, such as EMIS, SystemOne
- Good communication skills across all levels and disciplines within the organisation, externally in the Acute and with families / other members of the public
- Can demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the development of the service
- An understanding of financial control and ability to manage a service within its budget

- The anticipated base salary range for this position is £42,000 - £52,000, depending on experience or other legitimate business factors
