Manufacturing Engineer Apprentice

 

Hollister ULC is seeking a enthusiastic Female to join our team as a Manufacturing Engineering Apprentice, this initiative aims to take a step toward closing the gender gap in Engineering and Manufacturing.. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands on experience in Hollister Ballina working within the medical device manufacturing industry while pursuing a Level 7 Ordinary bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering. 

 

 

The successful candidate will work alongside experienced engineers, developing skills in manufacturing processes, automation, quality control, and operations management.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing innovative solutions to routine technical problems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Support the analysis of components, processes, and systems to enhance Overall Equipment Effectiveness.
  • Interpret and prepare technical documents, drawings, and reports in line with engineering standards.
  • Learn to operate computer hardware and software for automated engineering tasks.
  • Gain practical experience in operations management, lean engineering, and six-sigma methodologies.
  • Contribute to the design, validation, and optimization of manufacturing processes.
  • Support the implementation of quality control and assurance procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, economic, legal, and safety regulations in the medical device industry.
  • Assist in maintaining documentation, inventory, and records systems.
  • Develop communication skills to interact effectively with engineering professionals and project stakeholders.
  • Understand the ethical responsibilities of an engineer in the industry and commit to continuous learning and self-improvement.

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

 

  • Completed Leaving Certificate or equivalent, with a strong interest in engineering and manufacturing.
  • Pass (Grade O6 / H7 or better) in five ordinary Leaving Certificate subjects, including
  • Maths and in English or Irish
    • Maths (mandatory)
    • English or Irish (mandatory)
  • Commitment to enrol in and complete the 3–4-year Level 7 Manufacturing Engineering apprenticeship program.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and follow instructions.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Eagerness to learn and develop technical skills in a dynamic industry.

Programme Structure

  • The apprenticeship includes a level 7 qualification in Manufacturing Engineering.
  • It covers core engineering principles, manufacturing systems, digital technologies, materials science, and leadership skills.
  • Apprentices must complete coursework, exams, and workplace projects to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world engineering challenges.
  • The End Point Assessment (EPA) ensures competency in both academic and practical aspects of the role.

 

Duration of the Apprenticeship Programme

  • The entire apprenticeship lasts approximately 3-4 years.
  • It is a combination of workplace experience and academic study.
  • The academic portion is delivered through block release to minimise disruption to work commitments.

 

Attendance in ATU Sligo Academic Blocks

  • Apprentices are required to attend academic blocks in ATU Sligo
  • These blocks are typically structured into set periods where apprentices focus solely on academic learning.
  • The duration of each block varies but is usually a few weeks at a time.
