The Process Development Engineer (PDE), based in Stuarts Draft, Virginia, serves Operations and Global Engineering (GE) by understanding and optimizing the machines and processes within assigned platforms globally. The position requires a blend of leadership, technical acumen, business acumen, and communication skills. 

As a platform core team member, the PDE will support the building of a sustainable program, with metrics, to optimize assigned platforms by: 

    • Analyzing data to identify opportunities for increasing output of platforms
    • Executing improvements to reduce downtime
    • Optimizing systems and processes in place for monitoring performance
    • Identifying potential needs for future manufacturing solutions
    • Defining global best practices and standards for alignment
    • Supporting Should Cost savings opportunities
    • Troubleshooting global manufacturing issues



  • Must be able to, independently or in teams, investigate process issues and explore new solutions.  
  • Interact with teams or individuals, using direct or indirect influence techniques, to understand, guide, support and deliver positive business results.
  • Coordinate project activities across multi-functional and cross-geographical teams to meet project deliverables.
  • Monitor / coordinate project progress to anticipate problems and develop solutions before they become critical and communicate / report progress to management

Process Development

  • Develop and test process concepts to improve / optimize machine platforms with support from the PDC Lab in Libertyville, Illinois.
  • Oversee and/or check machine/tool designs for prototype equipment or equipment modifications required as part of project assignment. 
  • Provide input to process specifications, equipment specifications, request for quotations, factory/site acceptance plans, engineering processes, etc.
  • Complete process development and testing through the use of a systematic process, employing Design of Experiments (DOEs) and other relevant techniques to achieve optimum manufacturing processes.
  • Coordinate product or subassembly testing in support of process development.
  • Foster and manage vendor partner relationships in the development of key equipment.
  • Execute a range of capital projects to improve / optimize machine platforms across all of Hollister’s manufacturing plants


Technical Support

  • Provides technical consultation and support to outside machine vendors as part of the Hollister project team regarding machine design, product knowledge or process knowledge where an area of personal expertise exists.
  • Specifies and/or designs/details proof of concept equipment, components or tooling as required to meet project assignments.
  • Conduct process/equipment troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  • Ability to work closely with plant engineers, operators, and maintenance to troubleshoot machine and/or process issues and to provide training and mentoring to broaden their skills.

Work Experience Requirements:


  • Engineer - 3-7 yrs. of relevant experience
  • Sr. Engineer  8+  yrs. of relevant progressive experience

Education Requirements:

  • BSME or Technology equivalent required

Specialized Skills/Technical Knowledge:

Successful candidate will possess the following experience/skills:


  • Prior machine/tool design, machine building or automation experience
  • Basic PC and MS Office proficiency
  • Excellent written and verbal communications

Preferred / Familiarity

  • CAD Software (2D/3D) proficiency
  • Regulated industries/standards (medical/automotive/food packaging/FDA/ISO, etc.)
  • Statistical analysis tools, root cause analysis, DFM(A) principles
  • Web handling/converting processes, plastics assembly processes: heat sealing/joining, die cutting,  powder mixing
  • Pneumatics knowledge, industrial controls, vision systems
